Frequently Asked Questions

What are the advantages of wearing dental loupes?

Dental loupes – offer the following major advantages
a) enhanced visualization leading to better diagnosis and enhanced treatment care.
b ) improved ergonomics – ensuring that there are no stresses on the clinician’s back and neck.

Are dental loupes safe for my vision?

Dental loupes, manufactured using good quality optics and properly fitted to the customers requirement- offer better visual acuity, hence they are completely safe for the vision.
The clinician should check optics and comfort level before finalizing the dental loupes- low quality optics in the lens can result in headaches and neck pain.

What is the difference between Flip ups and TTL?

TTL– stands for through the lens- which signifies, that the lens are mounted directly on the lens frame- which means they are customized as per the user requirement, thus making them lighter, more ergonomic and ensuring high optical comfort for the user.

Flip ups– are not directly mounted on the lens frame, they are on a separate framework, and they can be adjusted to the desired configuration by the user- and when not in use – they can be flipped up. They generally are heavier and need to be adjusted and set every time the user wears them

What is the difference between Galilean and Keplerian loupes?

Galilean loupes are generally binocular lens- which can be TTL or Flip ups – they generally range in magnification from 2.5 to 3.5 x
Keplerian loupes are prismatic loupes – which can be TTL or Flip ups – they generally range in magnification higher than 3.5x – they use prisms, which help in higher magnification while trying to maintain a high field of view.

What is IPD and how is it measured?

IPD- stands for Inter pupillary distance – generally measured in mm it is the distance between left eye pupil and the right eye pupil. It can be measured with the help of a digital pupillometer or can also be measured by an optometrist.
Once the IPD is determined the TTL or Flip ups, can be set to reading of the IPD to ensure clear vision

What is working distance and how is it measured?

working distance, this is normally measured from the corner of the eye of the operator to the patient’s mouth – with the operator wearing the loupe – if they are wearing binocular or prismatic, the operators back should be straight with a slight bent of the neck, the resultant measurement helps customize the loupe to give clear vision to the operator at his most ergonomic position.
In case of ergonomic loupes, please ensure the neck of the operator is straight while taking the working distance measurement.

What are the advantages of Ergo loupes?

The ergo loupes – offer an ergonomic position- which ensures that operator’s back and neck are straight – without any stresses, which prevents any long-term complications of back and neck aches in the operator.

Is it necessary to wear headlight with loupes?

Wearing headlights with loupes is highly recommended, as the headlight offers a shadow free, focused illumination – leading to better diagnosis and precise treatment.

What are the maintenance protocols for dental loupes?

Cleaning of the loupes should be done with a soft microfiber cloth, do not use any abrasives or chemicals to clean and maintain the loupes.

If I am wearing prescription glasses, is it necessary to incorporate the prescription in the loupe?

To maintain clear vision, users should include their prescription in both the glasses and the loupes. This applies to both Flip-up and TTL loupes.
Depending on the prescription – the same may be incorporated only in the frame lens or sometimes in both the frame and loupe barrels.

How do i adjust the dental loupes to see a clear image?

If using flip-ups with adjustable IPD, the operator should adjust the IPD until the object appears as a single circle rather than two or overlapping circles.

I am using dental loupes – but they get fogged easily – what is the solution?

Ensuring a proper mask fit , will help in preventing the loupes from getting fogged.
Alternately the loupes are supplied with anti fog microfiber cleaning cloth which prevents the condensation on the frame and the loupes.
One can also use a mild detergent solution to spray on the lens and clean the loupe with soft microfiber cloth , this will prevent fogging on the frame lens.
